Variety is the key to define Switzerland’s Gastronomy. Being a territory surrounded by 4 culturally distinct countries, Switzerland’s gastronomy is a very rich culture.

The country’s gastronomy is influenced by the neighboring countries, absorbing a little of the German, Italian and French gastronomy. Furthermore, due to the multiculturalism that crosses Geneva, the gastronomy of this city presents an immense variety of traditions and fusions.

Famous for its cheeses, banks, clocks and chocolates, Switzerland has a specific gastronomical version in each one of its areas (or cantons), that reveal the outstanding influences of the neighboring (France, Germany, Austria and Italy) countries. With Latin influences (of Italy), Germanic and French, the Swiss cuisine is a rich gastronomical mosaic.

The typical cuisine is based on cheese, chocolate and bread. Furthermore, the majority of the population eats salad and vegetables regularly, contributing to a healthy nutrition. Fondue, raclette (potato and cheese) and Bratwurst (chicken sausage with bread) are the main typical foods. In Switzerland, all of the derived products of milk (cheese, yogurt, chocolate, ice cream...) are very tasty and appreciated.

The literal translation of fondue is "melted" and one of the most famous, Bourguignonne,is done with fried meat in oil and accompanied of several sauces. It doesn't have anything of fondue, but it receives that name because it involves the same ritual in turn of a caquelon (pan for fondue). The raclette, other typical delicacy now globalized, is also the name of the cheese that is melted, in the raclonette (specific device where the cheese is melted). This cheese acquires larger creaminess when heated and it is served with boiled potatoes with peel and pickles. The Swiss fruits unite, from the gastronomical point of view, the whole country. In the whole territory, strawberries, raspberries, mulberries and blueberries are the base of the tastiest pies.
